Richard Porter was a senior partner at Kirkland & Ellis until early 2024 and advised some of the nation’s top private equity firms and corporations on mergers, acquisitions and other complex corporate transactional matters while maintaining a high-level involvement in the national and Illinois political scene.
During his 31 years at Kirkland, Porter represented high profile clients in scores of transactions such as PayPal in its sale to eBay, Biomet in its sale to a consortium led by KKR, Dex Media in its restructuring and combination with SuperMedia, and Net2Phone in its sale to AT&T; top private equity firms such as Madison Dearborn Partners, Waud Capital, Arsenal Capital, Monomoy Capital, and CIVC Partners in a wide variety of transactions; and even the Federal Communications Commission in its restructuring and sale of spectrum rights.
At the same time, he served as National Committeeman from Illinois from 2014 until July 2024, and on the RNC Executive Committee over the last four years. He has participated in numerous national, state, and local political campaigns, including serving on finance committees for Republican Presidential nominees, as well as for Illinois Governor, Senate and House candidates. Most recently, Porter was an informal advisor to Speaker McCarthy and has been a regular contributor to RealClearPolitics and the Daily Telegraph.
Porter’s political involvement started with the 1988 George H.W. Bush campaign, after which he served at the White House as Special Assistant to President George H.W. Bush and Executive Secretary of the Domestic Policy Council, then Counselor to Vice President Dan Quayle. Earlier, he served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Policy Review and Analysis for the Department of the Treasury.
Porter served as a law clerk to Judge Richard A. Posner on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. He also worked as a Lawyer-Economist at Lexecon, Inc. and started his business career at IBM as a Systems Engineer and Marketing Representative.
While at Kirkland, Porter chaired the firm’s global new matters screening committee, as well as the Chicago Operations Committee. Additionally, he serves on the Boards of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, and, until July 2024, the Chicago Shakespeare Theater. He previously served on the Illinois State Police Merit Board and on Senator Mark Kirk’s judicial selection panel.
Porter completed his J.D. at the University of Chicago, where he won the John Olin Prize for Law and Economics, and received his B.A. from Middlebury College in Philosophy & Russian History. He is a cancer survivor and is married with four children.
